Description
About Phortify
Phortify - Photonics Education Network for Next-Gen Innovation and Digital Skills Excellence for Industry and Society - is dedicated to the Enhancement and Harmonisation of Photonics education and training across Europe. Phortify offers a two-year European Master’s in Photonics Engineering, combining advanced coursework, hands-on laboratory training, and cutting-edge digital skills development, structured mobility windows and industry placements. Students who complete the Phortify track receive an official Phortify Certificate in addition to their Master’s degree. Students can enrol in a Phortify-related master programme at any of the 7 participating universities. In addition, Phortify provides stand-alone modules with harmonised standards for quality assurance and certification, offering high flexibility and mobility for both students and industry professionals. Finally, Phortify organises mentoring programmes for women postdocs and early PIs as well as one-day immersive experience events for prospective students, providing a unique opportunity to explore photonics and its applications.
About the Phortify Funding Framework
Phortify’s Funding Framework aims to widen participation in photonics by supporting students and staff who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM. This includes women and gender minorities, students from low-income or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, first-generation university students, and learners with disabilities or specific support needs. The programme also encourages participation from regions with limited access to advanced higher education, as well as those belonging to cultural or minority groups that may be underrepresented in higher education. By addressing these dimensions of diversity, Phortify helps ensure a more inclusive and equitable community of future photonics professionals. Participants selected for Phortify funding receive financial support for studies and mobility pathways within the participating master programmes, or for mentoring programmes and STEM experience workshops organised by one of the Phortify partners.

Conditions
Typed facts extracted from the source documents by Scindu's grant-data review. Each value keeps its own conditions. Unknown means unstated, not zero or unlimited.
- Applicant restriction
- Latest official BSc and MSc (if applicable) transcripts must show the stated minimum academic threshold: CGPA 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, or its stated grading equivalents 16/20 or 80% (or an equivalent grading scale). These are alternative grade-scale representations of the academic threshold, not a funding rate, share or salary.
- Applicant restriction
- Applicants must be nationals of an EU Member State, an associated country, or a country with which the EU has an ongoing cooperation agreement under the Digital Europe Programme. The PDF says eligible countries include, inter alia, countries participating in Digital Partnerships, Trade and Technology Councils, digital dialogues, or other ongoing EU digital-technology cooperation. It then labels the following an “Authoritative list of eligible countries”: Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korea (South Korea), Kosovo, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Moldova (Republic of), Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United States (US), Libya. This represents the PDF’s own list and broader categories; it is not an update or legal determination of current country status.
- Applicant restriction
- Applicants must be enrolled in a participating Phortify Master’s programme at a consortium university.
- Application restriction
- SEDIA recorded 2027-02-03 as the deadline for this exact call; current portal acceptance is not verified.
- Application restriction
- SEDIA recorded 2026-02-04 as the opening date for this exact call; current portal acceptance is not verified.
- Application restriction
- The application must include the latest official academic BSc and MSc (if applicable) transcripts, a Phortify-specific motivation letter describing the applicant’s motivation and alignment with Phortify objectives, and a CV. The documents are required for eligibility screening; missing required documentation ends evaluation as ineligible.
The criteria PDF states these as required supporting documents for this pilot call; this does not establish that a portal is currently accepting applications.
- Application restriction
- Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis at regular intervals, typically every 2 to 3 months; an earlier evaluation may occur when submitted-application volume or budget availability so requires. This is a typical, discretionary review cadence, not a guaranteed deadline or count of awards.
- Application restriction
- The call description says applications must be submitted via the Phortify website and applicants must consult MyPhortify for detailed instructions and links to relevant local application forms. It states this is not an EU action: Phortify launches the call and provides selected support in its own name and responsibility, including call preparation and selection; publication in the EU Funding & Tenders Portal is for visibility and is not EU approval or a waiver of Phortify responsibility.
The public description identifies the application route but does not expose or verify applicant-specific local forms or current intake access; no live application/acceptance status is inferred.
- Eligible project scope
- The internship must be directly related to Phortify’s thematic areas and objectives and must contribute to the student’s academic and professional development. This preserves the PDF’s internship wording despite its Master Thesis call title.
- Eligible project scope
- The SEDIA call description scopes the supported Master’s thesis projects to projects offered by and implemented in collaboration with SMART Photonics, in an industrial research and innovation environment addressing photonics and related digital technologies. This source-specific implementation scope is separate from the PDF’s inconsistent “internship” title/wording; it does not establish that a thesis with any other host qualifies.
Attribution: exact call-specific SEDIA destinationDetails/beneficiaryAdministration; preserve the unresolved Master’s-thesis versus PDF “internship” wording conflict already recorded.
- Other condition
- Evaluation has two sequential stages: (1) eligibility verification on a pass/fail basis; applications that fail eligibility or omit required supporting documents are ineligible and are not further evaluated; and (2) comparative assessment and ranking of eligible applications. The three distinct qualitative criteria are Academic Excellence (academic performance, relevance of previous studies, preparedness for the proposed Master’s thesis project); Motivation and Alignment with Phortify Objectives (quality, coherence and relevance of the motivation letter, including alignment with Phortify educational and societal objectives); and Overall Applicant Profile (skills, experience, background and potential contribution to the Phortify community as reflected in the CV). Each criterion is independently scored from 0 through 5 points, with a maximum total of 15. After each rolling evaluation round, eligible applications are ranked by merit and funding is allocated until the available call budget is exhausted; under oversubscription, higher-ranked applications have priority. For identical or comparable results, DEI tie-break rules promote underrepresented groups, including women and students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Other condition
- The described internship must be implemented under the responsibility of a Phortify partner institution.
- Other condition
- The described internship must take place during the student’s period of study.
- Other condition
- Local selection committees are established by SMART Photonics in coordination with the Phortify Consortium and apply the framework consistently and impartially. Committee members must declare conflicts of interest and ensure appropriate mitigation. Partner institutions document evaluation outcomes and funding decisions; awarded scholarships are communicated to the Phortify Coordinator; aggregate data are reported under project reporting obligations.
- Other condition
- The operative PDF is titled “Phortify Master Thesis Grants - Pilot Call” and its eligibility section refers to Master thesis projects, while the subsequent conditions require applicants to be students at the time of an internship and impose internship-specific conditions. The program terminology is internally inconsistent and is preserved pending clarification from the source owner.
Amounts and costs
- Indicative budget
- €6,300
Topic budget as stated in the portal's budget table. Lump-sum and per-project limits are in the call conditions.
- Call allocation
- €6,300
The €6,300 total call allocation is the amount retained from the SEDIA call record. The four-page operative eligibility/evaluation PDF does not state a per-project lump sum or amount. SEDIA separately describes €3,150 per supported Master’s thesis project and up to two projects subject to budget/evaluation; these are distinct source claims, not a PDF-derived amount.
- Eligible cost
- SEDIA describes support as contributing to costs directly related to successful completion of the Master’s thesis during the thesis period, including living, mobility and other study-related expenses; its listed activities include travel, accommodation and subsistence. The source says support may be used only for activities listed above and no other activities are eligible. This is a use restriction on the listed lump-sum support, not an invoice-reimbursement rule or a salary entitlement.
Call-specific SEDIA scope; retain the existing source-attributed EUR 3,150 duration-independent lump-sum fact and EUR 6,300 listed allocation separately. The SEDIA wording does not convert the lump sum into actual-cost reimbursement.
- Unit contribution
- €3,150
The retained SEDIA call description links to the official MyPhortify application page and lists this support as a €3,150 lump sum not linked to duration. The four-page eligibility/evaluation PDF does not state the award amount; treat this as indexed call-description evidence, not a separately verified award term from that PDF. The description says up to two projects may be supported, subject to budget and evaluation.
